Ductile Iron Castings - Pacific Alloy Casting, Los Angeles, California

Specification for Ductile Iron Castings - ASTM A-536

Ductile iron is cast iron whose graphite is in the form of spherical nodules making it more flexible and elastic than other cast irons. These improvements to the mechanical properties allow DI to be used in a wider range of casting applications than standard gray iron. DI has also replaced steel castings in some applications providing a lower-cost alternative.

An example is the DI crankshaft currently used in all but ultra-high performance automotive engines. Formerly the crankshaft was made from a costly steel casting. The high stress involved in this application did not permit the use of gray iron. The invention of DI and its superior strength was the perfect balance between a costly steel casting and low-strength gray iron for the crankshaft.
